The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has initiated a 10-year review of the 16 CFR Part 1633 open-flame standard regarding mattress flammability and requested public comment on several issues as part of that process. The International Sleep Products Association and the Sleep Products Safety Council submitted comments to the CPSC based, in part, on a survey of ISPA members.
ISPA urged the CPSC to streamline mattress flammability standards, among other things, it asked the CPSC to reduce the conditioning time requirements in the standard from 48 hours to 24 hours, to act on ISPA’s previous request to rescind the 16 CFR Part 1632 as redundant or, failing that, to initiate a rulemaking to consider changes to streamline and merge the 16 CFR Part 1632 and 1633 standards.
