Newark, New Jersey-based Shifman Mattress Co. has designed and donated 10 double-sided sleeping mats to families in Haiti who were affected by Hurricane Matthew in October.
Because the beds needed to fit into barrels for shipping, they had to be custom made, the company said in a news release.
“We don’t normally make a product like this,” said Bill Hammer, president, “but our skilled craftspeople are very talented and able to design and manufacture whatever is needed. … I am pleased that we were able to help with the Haitian relief effort.”
The company teamed up with the owners of Kafe Louverture, a Brooklyn eatery, who transported the beds to Haiti.
