Mattress major Serta Simmons Bedding LLC has commenced mattress manufacturing at a new plant in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. It is twice the size of a former site in Springfield, Massachusetts, and employs 240 people, many of whom transferred from the old plant.
Since 2017, SSB has opened two larger plants in Houston and Moreno Valley, California, as part of a $100 million manufacturing investment. A fourth facility will come online this year in Seattle. The new plants bring the manufacture of both the Serta and Beautyrest brands under one roof.
“We’re excited to have opened a new, larger facility in Windsor Locks, which is an important step in our strategy to increase manufacturing capacity,” said Michael Traub, chief executive officer of SSB. “By introducing new technology, adding headcount and moving to larger facilities, we’re better positioned to support our retail partners’ great consumer demand in the Northeast region.”
The 268,000-square-foot facility services SSB business in the Northeast, fulfilling orders generally in less than 72 hours, according to a news release.
SSB also is planning a unified corporate headquarters in Doraville, Georgia, that is expected to open in the first quarter of 2019 and house 500 employees.
